WHY ARE ADULT MASSAGE PARLORS A PROBLEM?

DID YOU KNOW the The Ventura County Coalition Against Human Trafficking conducted a survey in 2016, documenting incidences of human trafficking and local prevalence? Fifty seven victims were identified over a two year span.

“Victims were overwhelmingly female and mostly adults; 95% were sex trafficking cases. The majority of victims were Asian.”

“The women trafficked in massage parlors are typically immigrants from China or South Korea, usually mothers between the ages of 35-55 who are looking for a way to support their families. They are often lied to or seriously misled about the type of work they’ll be doing, by traffickers who know they have debts they need to pay or are otherwise in no position to say “no” to a source of income.”

RISK FACTORS

Who is vulnerable?

  • Factors that undermine the ability to protect oneself or that disrupt connections to social and family support increase susceptibility to coercion.
  • Variables that contribute to a person’s vulnerability to being trafficked include: membership in a marginalized group; prior victimization and trauma; disabilities; immigrant or refugee status; and family disruption. These may be magnified by globalization, poverty, political instability and war.

MYTHS OF

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Adult Massage Parlors are safer than prostitution, they empower women and are legitimate businesses.

Defend Dignity

The women who are trafficked in parlors want to be there and have made a choice to stay.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

AWARENESS

How do you know if your massage therapist is professionally qualified? Is it easy to recognize an illicit massage business? Staying vigilant in your own neighborhood is key. Know and identify human trafficking warning signs. If you see something, say something. Do not hesitate to call your local police department or report an anonymous tip.

TALK ABOUT IT

Educate yourself and others of the myths and stereotypes of human trafficking. Read survivor stories. Is this happening in your neighborhood? Why do you think women trafficked through massage parlors are often overlooked? How are your city council members addressing this issue? Is your local government properly regulating massage businesses?

IF YOU ARE EVER A WITNESS TO A CRIME – DO NOT INTERVENE OR APPROACH THE ASSAILANT OR VICTIM. FIND SOMEWHERE SAFE TO CALL 911. THAT IS THE BEST WAY YOU CAN HELP ANYONE WHO YOU SUSPECT TO BE IN DANGER.

DO NOT BE A HERO.

“You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again you did not know.
